The Digital Generation and the “techno” gap in Argentina
Lately I’ve been listening to quite a lot of reports on “Generations” X or Y or whatever the name you feel like giving…and I can’t help sighing. I feel exhausted: Keeping up with your students is getting harder and sometimes it’s beyond your means.
I guess we, teachers, still have a very long way to go to catch up. In this part of the world, even when you hold the knowledge and teaching skills needed to deal with all this new stuff it’s sometimes hard to get to all the tools which seem to be so accessible within places like the one presented on the vid.
Anyway,let’s keep on the track, otherwise, it WILL be a fact: WE’ LL GET LOST.
Alumno Siglo XXI – Docente Siglo XX (en busca del “remix” …perdido??)

Existen muchas formas de manejar el uso de internet con alumnos que estudian inglés, aunque el hallazgo de la mejor alternativa no responde a una fórmula mágica que siempre funciona. Tampoco es constante, como los alumnos, cambia…con ellos y con la aparición de nuevas herramientas.
Es así que a lo largo de todos estos años de observación e investigación de metodologías de enseñanza orientadas a promover el aprendizaje independiente he focalizado en diferentes tendencias que han ido desde el centro de autoaprendizaje (Self-Access Centre) en los años ‘90 hasta la explotación de material multimedia (principios de los años 2000) e internet (hasta hoy, con el uso de las TICs – tecnologías de información y comunicación-)
Lo interesante al transitar explorando apasionadamente todas las nuevas modalidades con el fin de ofrecer lo mejor es encontrarnos con situaciones que van desde la relación padres-docente (texto completo en inglés en este link) hasta la brecha que existe entre la clase de inglés y la realidad escolar diaria de cada alumno.
Ahora bien, es imposible tratar temas de este tipo sin haber probado al menos un 80% de las opciones que existen. Confieso que he leído y probado blogs, wikis, microblogs y redes sociales como Facebook y otras, pero nada superará la creatividad y decisión del docente cuando diseña material propio pensando en sus alumnos. Es por ello que el sitio para los alumnos de English Studio es ahora privado, para promover la práctica segura, desde todo punto de vista: Para que los pequeños internautas no caigan en trampa alguna y también para que naveguen a través de contenidos conocidos que estén entrenados /preparados para manejar de forma interactiva sin grandes dificultades que terminen en frustración ( esos ejercicios no me salen, ergo…no me gustan, y…en consecuencia, no los intento realizar de nuevo…)
Desde que el sitio web se convirtió en una red privada (marzo de 2009), los alumnos (de todas las edades y niveles de inglés) lo explotan y disfrutan más. Realmente han hecho el sitio propio y considero que en una gran mayoría se están beneficiando desde lo lingüístico de una forma más que interesante. Algunos ya han hecho del mismo “el” elemento de consulta extra clase confiable y siempre al alcance, aunque la “teacher” no esté cerca…
Un buen docente es como una candela- se consume a medida que ilumina el camino

Será que de a poco y con constancia, aquella “brecha” metodológica-generacional se va borrando? Si así no lo fuera, seguiré buceando en el gran mar del aprendizaje.

Shaken by external factors
That’s the way I’ve seen the teaching / learning community these days. The former – used to facilitating online tasks to students or not -and the latter, forced to manage their studying habits differently.
The reason? The swine flu that has broken out in the world and that has been seriously affecting the Argentine life styles this Winter.
Teachers and learners have been made to change their working habits. Those ELT professionals with some expertise in the use of internet tools to assist their lessons have faced no difficulty dealing with these circumstances, heading for more than interesting outcomes and reflections.
Education authorities decided to suspend lessons all over Argentina without previous planning. There was no time to react : Personally, I’m sure I would have arranged a proper course of action by exploiting internet tools if I had been given notice of such measure, but that has to do with our Government policy…and that’s another story.
I saw teachers and schools in Buenos Aires and many other places react with a sort of serious plan, involving families.
Consequently, different subjects were dealt with beautifully.
Under all these events, on thinking whether turning English Studio into a temporally virtual learning center ONLY, I found myself doubting whether I might have been able to support my young learners (and their parents) desperately asking questions on how to tackle this task or the other. Probably I deprived them of their chance to become really autonomous learners! After all it’s me the one who always complains about their teacher dependency !
I missed the emergency factor for various reasons. However, the virtual features will keep ON within my classes
I can’t help wondering whether the teaching community is really up to the necessary standards, as “sending” homework via internet does not mean becoming the teachers students need nowadays.
An online teacher should have really more than one thing up his sleeve!
Most of my posts have referred to the gap between teachers offer and students demand . I hope this external “thing” described here has served to narrow it.
