Japanese technology adds smell to movie experience

A single tear streams down a starlet’s cheek. In-chimes the
surround-sound sappy song. Could the intended emotions of such a scene
be clearer?

Apparently, yes. A new computer technology, set to debut later this
month in Japan, will release mood-specific scents (in this case,
flowers) during moments of Hollywood high-drama.

NTT Communications Corp. created the tool. It uses a computer to emit
an array of liquid perfumes from the back row of a cinema at very
specific moments during a movie. The creators hope to enhance viewers’
experience with the smells, conveying feelings from anger to happiness.
